Get Involved

Communities all over the United States are looking for solutions to the infrastructure crisis, so it's important to know the facts about public-private partnerships and to make your voice heard.

Writing a letter to local public officials, as well as the editor of your local newspapers, is a great opportunity to share your opinion and educate the public. A well written, well timed letter can shift public opinion and influence policy.

Before you get started, here are a few tips:

  • The best letters are courteous, to the point, and include specific supporting examples.

  • State any professional credentials or personal experience you may have, especially those pertaining to the subject of your letter.

  • Provide specific rather than general information about how the topic affects you and others.

  • Submit letters by e-mail whenever possible.

  • Be careful about accuracy and avoid personal attacks.

  • Keep your letter as short as possible by focusing on one, or at most two, major points. Support your position with facts, statistics, citations or other evidence. Be sure to stay under the paper's word limit when writing to a newspaper.

  • Close with the thought you'd like the reader to remember. Consider the central point you want people reading the letter to take away.

  • Include your name, street address and phone number, even when using email.
